Lamar Advertising Headquarters, as designed by Eskew+Dumez+Ripple, is a reaction against the standard office environment; it is a collaborative administrative center, a proposal planned to strengthen a culture of openness. This refurbishment of a 1970’s office building reinvented a segmented office plan into a communal arena to connect colleges and contribute to the communicating whole.

To achieve collaboration this in an outdated office building with very large floor slabs and narrow windows limiting views to the outside, Eskew+Dumez+Ripple removed interior floor plates to connect the various levels; primary among these interventions is a stadium type seating arrangement which is adjacent to the company café. It is imagined that, at this location, the staff can comfortably gather around for announcements and presentations, or simply relax in the Lamar “time square.”
Exterior modifications were minimal in this project, apart from an outdoor court which penetrates the second floor of the building. Introducing a captured landscape into the office environment, this “garden room” gives the workplace brilliant luminosity and yet another gathering area.
This building scheme is meant to facilitate a creative, informal working environment, drawing from daily interactions among persons in hallways or around the coffee pot, and becoming less about “meeting” in the traditional sense. This singular, inventive community at Lamar Advertising aims for congregation apart from formality.
